Introduction

For most of recorded history, humans have looked to the night sky with a natural instinct of curiosity and wonder. Before the digitalisation of the modern world, countless civilisations sat underneath a starry sky, searching for divine meaning and understanding. Ancient storytellers transformed the mysterious night sky into familiar mythology, turning myths and legends into the stars and constellations. By the 5th century BC, the Greeks and Romans had linked both the planets and constellations to their gods, cataloguing 48 of the 88 official constellations recognised today. 

Beyond myth, the dynamic nature of the sky kept early humans intrigued, turning celestial observation into a fundamental part of daily life. By watching these cosmic movements, they learned to navigate, track time, and establish seasonal order. In doing so, they developed a profound connection to the complexity and beauty of the stars, making stargazing one of the greatest unifiers of the entire human experience.

From the start of the electric revolution through to today's technological age, humans have rapidly removed themselves from the elements. The ancient need to watch the sky to track daily, seasonal, and lunar cycles has been replaced by modern devices. Calendars, maps, GPS systems, and smartphones give us instant access to time and location data, while artificial lighting and screens have replaced the ancient human tradition of sitting under a dark sky and telling stories.

There is something deeply humbling about looking up at a truly dark sky. In optimal conditions, the night sky reveals thousands of stars, the faint band of the Milky Way, and subtle celestial features hidden to urban viewers. Unfortunately, that view is becoming increasingly rare, as more of us live underneath an artificial glow of an urban area.

What is Light Pollution?

Light pollution is the excessive, misdirected, or unnecessary use of artificial light at night that shines upward into the sky. It brightens the background sky, washes out fainter stars, and degrades the contrast required to view faint deep-space objects such as nebulae and galaxies.

Light pollution stems from streetlights, floodlights, commercial buildings, shopping centres, illuminated signs, and residential fixtures. 

It generally falls into two primary categories:

  • Skyglow: The broad, hazy halo of light hanging over urban areas as artificial light scatters off atmospheric particles.
  • Light Trespass: Unwanted light spilling into unintended spaces, such as a neighbour's security light or a streetlight shining directly into a bedroom window.

Because light scatters through atmospheric layers, skyglow does not stay local. It radiates outward from cities, affecting rural areas far away from the source. That means even people living well away from major population centres still suffer the effects of light pollution.

A Growing Issue

With rapid global urbanisation, light pollution is estimated to grow annually. Today, over one-third of the global population (2.8 billion people) and over 60% of people living in heavily urbanised nations can no longer see the Milky Way from their homes. Modern generations represent the first humans in history growing up in a world where stars are the last thing people notice at night.

Light pollution also impacts scientific research & deep space observation, threatening over 60% of ground-based astronomical observatories with encroaching glare. In addition, excessive artificial light disrupts nocturnal ecosystems, disorients migratory birds, sea turtles, and insects, while throwing off natural human circadian rhythms and sleep quality.

The 1994 Los Angeles Skyglow Event

In 1994, a major earthquake struck Los Angeles, causing widespread power outages that plunged the city into total darkness. Emergency services received influxes of calls from anxious residents reporting a strange, giant, silvery cloud hovering in the sky. Unbeknownst to them, they were looking directly at the band of the Milky Way Galaxy for the very first time.

The good news is that awareness is growing too. More people are becoming interested in preserving dark skies, using better lighting design, and supporting responsible outdoor lighting practices. The more we value the night sky, the more likely it is to be protected.


The Bortle Scale: Measuring Sky Quality

Astronomers rate night sky darkness using a 9-level scale known as the Bortle Scale:

  • Class 9 (Inner-City Sky): The sky is brilliantly lit. Only the Moon, planets, and a handful of the brightest stars are visible.
  • Class 7–4 (Suburban Skies): Skyglow is noticeable in most directions. Major constellations are visible, but fainter structures like the Milky Way are washed out or barely noticeable.
  • Class 3–1 (Rural to Dark-Sky Sites): True dark skies. The Milky Way displays intricate detail, airglow and zodiacal light can be seen, and thousands of stars fill the sky.

How to Get the Most Out of Stargazing

If you want an unforgettable stargazing experience, completely escaping light pollution makes all the difference. Here are practical steps to maximize your views:

1. Escape the City Glow

Distance matters. Travelling just 30 to 50 kilometres away from major city centres significantly improves sky clarity, bringing fainter stars into view. The further into rural regions you travel, the darker the sky becomes.

2. Time Your Trip Around the Moon

The Moon is nature’s brightest spotlight! Even in a dark-sky location, a half-full or full Moon completely washes out deep-space objects. Plan your stargazing trips around the New Moon phase or during a time when the Moon has already set below the horizon. This changes each day as the Moon makes its trip around the Earth, so be sure to research prior to stargazing.

3. Avoid Local "Light Traps"

Avoid setting up near illuminated facilities like shopping centre parking lots, sports fields with floodlights, heavy traffic, or house lights and streetlamps. Seek out quiet parks, nature reserves, open fields, or rural lookouts. If nearby light is unavoidable, position yourself so that your back faces the source.

4. Protect Your Night Vision

It takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes for human eyes to fully adapt to total darkness. Checking a bright smartphone screen instantly resets this process. If you use a phone for star charts or require a flashlight, use a red light filter on the phone with screen brightness dimmed, or a red torch. Red light preserves dark adaptation far better than white or blue light, and won't completely ruin your night vision!

5. Check the Weather & Twilight Times

For the best contrast, observe after the end of astronomical twilight darkness, typically 90 to 120 minutes after sunset, once twilight has completely faded. Ensure the weather forecast calls for clear, low-humidity skies, as even thin clouds can reflect light and reduce visibility. 

6. Pack for Comfort

  • Bring a reclining chair or blanket to lie on to avoid neck strain while observing overhead.
  • Dress warmly, even in mild weather, as temperatures drop rapidly once you stand still at night.
  • Start simple: Learn major constellations with the naked eye first before using binoculars or a telescope to hunt for nebulae and galaxies.

Protecting the Night Sky

Light pollution is not inevitable. Simple changes like shielding lights downward, using only the brightness needed, and turning off unnecessary lights when they’re not in use can help preserve darker skies. Small improvements made in homes, businesses, and public spaces can add up to a huge difference.

If you ever get the opportunity to step away from the glow of artificial lights and look up from a truly dark location, take it. For thousands of years, every person in human history has looked up at that same starry expanse with awe, and now it is our turn.
