The Campo del Cielo is an iconic group of iron meteorites that fell to Earth approximately 4,500 years ago in what is now Argentina. The name, which translates from Spanish as "Field of the Sky," was given to the area by Spanish conquistadors who were directed there by local indigenous people who had long used the metallic fragments for tools and weapons. The strewn field, which is one of the largest in the world, covers a 3km x 18.5km area on the border of the Chaco and Santiago del Estero provinces and contains at least 26 known impact craters.

The chemical composition of these meteorites is predominantly iron () at approximately 92.6% and nickel () at 6.7%, with trace amounts of cobalt (), phosphorus (), and other elements like gallium () and germanium (). The massive parent meteoroid, estimated to have weighed over 600 tons before atmospheric entry, fragmented upon impact, creating the widely distributed crater field and meteorite shower. Campo del Cielo represents one of the most substantial meteorite discoveries in history, offering a tangible piece of the early solar system's formation, dating back 4.5 billion years.

Scientific Significance:

  • Extraordinary Composition: These are true iron meteorites, composed primarily of iron () and nickel (), with trace elements that confirm their extra-terrestrial origin
  • A Billion-Year Story: When cut and etched, specimens reveal the stunning Widmanstätten pattern—an intricate, cross-hatched crystal structure that could only form over millions of years of cooling in the vacuum of space

Whether you're a collector, a science enthusiast, or someone fascinated by the universe, a Campo del Cielo meteorite offers a profound and beautiful connection to the Cosmos. Own a piece of the "Field of the Sky" and hold a piece of history older than our planet's own mountains.
