Named after the historic 1934 Rumuruti fall in Kenya, "R" chondrites represent a highly distinct and elusive class of stony meteorites, accounting for less than 1% of all classified meteorites. Scientists believe these specimens originated from the highly oxidized, dust-covered surface (regolith) of a primitive asteroid. Unlike ordinary meteorites, Rumuruti chondrites are unique because they contain almost no free iron metal, instead locking their iron away in beautiful, nickel-rich sulfide grains and a highly oxidised silicate matrix.

This individual specimen weighs 7.3 grams. It displays the classic, complex internal structure and subtle chondrules typical of this fascinating class.
